Arrival at Ytra Lón Farm & Retreat and settle into your studio. You will be met in the reception by your guide for the next days. Participants get to know each other over a delicious dinner.
At 8.00 pm we come together at the bar and listen to an introduction of the program for the next few days.
We hike from Sauðanes Farm to the lighthouse at Grenjanes. Along the way, we find various cultural monuments. At the end of the trip, we’ll arrive at Sauðaneshús museum for coffee, hot chocolate, and waffles topped with cream. Then we head home to Ytra Lón where Jacuzzi and cold pot are waiting. When refreshed a rejuvenated dinner is served. (9 km)
Today we set out to enjoy driftwood and beautiful beaches, full of life. We hike down to the sea and along the black sand beach from Lambanes to Krossós, following Krossós river and back home along the old church track, Messumelur. (10 km)
We drive up to Heiðarfjall mountain and discover the traces of a NATO forces’ radar station. Then out to the cliff Skoruvíkurbjarg, which is buzzing with birds, and look at the Northern Gannet colony in Stóri-Karl. Continue all the way to Fontur, entering the end of the world.
After visiting the lighthouse and seeing where oceans meet, we go to the deserted village of Skálar and hike up to the graveyard of the village. (5 km)
On our way back we will explore several interesting places.
This morning offers us an easy day as we drive east to Bakkafjörður, making a stop at Djúpilækur farm to learn about its history. We continue and make the short hike to the mesmerizing Draugafoss waterfall.
Then we drive on through Bakkajörður village and go for the scenic hike to Digranes lighthouse. This hike is beautiful and so is the view from the lighthouse. (9 km) We experience some enchanting views of Bakkaflói bay before heading to dinner at Ytra Lón.
This last evening together we are having a party.
After one more delicious breakfast, we head home. Another option might be to stay a little bit longer in Ytra Lón and explore its surroundings on our own, experience nature’s silence a bit more. Or we continue our journey through Iceland.
Don’t miss out
What our guests say
‘’Langanes is a very special region of Iceland. It is not on the map of the average tourist looking to check Iceland off her bucket list. People who come to this far-flung outpost have specific interests and goals - birds, quietude, a sense of isolation, wide open spaces, interest in local history.
Ytra Lón comes as a surprise. It is a working farm. The rooms are large, fitted with a mini kitchen and fridge, and tastefully furnished. To find this level of comfort in such a remote location is a blessing.
Perfect oasis of peace
‘’I really enjoyed my time in this charming place when staying in a spacious studio apartment. I appreciated a peaceful environment, liked my evening stroll along the river and a nice talk with my hosts. I even had a chance to explore their farm, meet horses and watch the sheepdog training.
I recommend joining one of the Langanes tours organized from Ytra Lón. It was amazing to listen to the stories of local farmers, discover more about Icelanders in general and on top of that admire a huge colony of gannets nesting on cliffs in Skoruvíkurbjarg. ‘’
Amazing place to stay!
‘'Wonderful place, lonely and hauntingly beautiful. Delightful studio, comfy bed, amazing set up, welcoming host and delicious food with many homemade delicacies. A place to remember and to recommend without reservation.''
